Additional Facts About LASIK

If you are tired of wearing glasses or contact lenses, you might be considering LASIK surgery. Here are some additional facts and statistics about the procedure:

  1. LASIK is a surgery that is performed on a very delicate part of the eye.
  2. Hundreds of thousands of people have had LASIK surgery, most of them very successfully.
  3. There are risks and complications possible, as with any surgical procedure.
  4. LASIK may not give you perfect vision. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) reports that seven out of ten patients achieve 20/20 vision, but 20/20 does not always mean perfect vision.
  5. If you have LASIK to correct your distance vision, you will still need reading glasses at around age 45.
  6. LASIK is still too new a procedure to know if there are any long-term ill effects beyond five years after the surgery.
  7. LASIK cannot be reversed.
  8. Most insurance does not cover LASIK procedures.
  9. You may need additional procedures - called enhancements - to achieve the best possible vision after the initial LASIK surgery
