Only ophthalmologists (eye MDs) are permitted to perform LASIK eye surgeries. Your optometrist can refer you to a doctor who performs LASIK eye surgeries. There are a few things that you should ask the surgeon before committing to his or her services:
- How long have you been doing LASIK surgery?
- How much experience do you have with the LASIK procedure?
- What is you success rate and under what criteria to do consider a procedure successful?
- What laser will you be using for my procedure? Make sure your surgeon is using a laser that is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
- What is involved in post-surgical care?
- Who will handle my post-surgery care?
- What are the possible risks and complications
